Diese Versuche sind jedoch unzulänglich, vielleicht sogar unmöglich: «The concepts we use to organize the diversity of the world are our own, we produce them and with them comes perhaps the risk of emptying the world of its essence by fixing it in a catalogue of images, landscapes, definitions, resolutions (scientific, religious, etc.)», sagt Pauline Julier darüber. Dies entspricht auch ihrem «vulkanischen Paradox»: Der Vulkan zerstört bei einem Ausbruch alles, auf das er trifft, während er es zugleich konserviert. Mit dem Festhalten im Bild verliert die Welt ihre Lebendigkeit und wird entsprechend Codes der Repräsentation organisiert, die immer menschlich sind. So erscheinen die Ordnungsversuche nutzlos, umso mehr, als der Mensch der Natur und ihren Kräften ausgeliefert ist.
